MARCH 2, 6:30 P.M., TBHS MEETING
THE ATRIUM, FIRST NATIONAL BANK, ALAMOGORDO

Do you know where in Otero County that the town of Orange was located?  How about Valmont?  Most likely you know how Alamogordo got its name, but what about Tularosa?  And did you know there is a place in New Mexico that received its name because of a little dog with muddy paws?

Come to the next meeting of the Tularosa Basin Historical Society on March 2, at 6:30 p.m., at The Atrium of First National Bank, 414 E. 10th St., Alamogordo and learn much more about New Mexico places and names.

The Place Names of New Mexico   After a short business meeting, Robert Julyan, author of The Place Names of New Mexico, will be giving an interesting lecture, with humor and local examples.  He has made many trips to the Tularosa Basin and considers the Tularosa Basin an exceptionally interesting area. Bob Julyan gives audiences a lively names tour of the New Mexico landscape.

Mr. Julyan is an Albuquerque-based writer and lecturer specializing in the connections between human and natural history. His Place Names of New Mexico is the standard reference. He has been chair of the New Mexico Geographic Names Committee for more than 15 years. He has also written guides to the wilderness and the Continental Divide Trail. The book will be available  for purchase at the meeting.

Everyone is welcome to attend this free program furnished by the New Mexico Endowment, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Office of Cultural Affairs.
