Feast Day Fiesta

Markings on the painting are:
  • Crowning the Fiesta Queen
  • Trombeau 1961
  • Nuestra Senora De La Luz
"The Our Lady of the Light Catholic Church always held the Feast Day Fiesta in the village of La Luz on 15 August. There was an all-daylong fiesta with a parade, booths, food, piñatas, talent show , and a dance. Bonfires, three to a block, were built in the evening.

The highlight was the coronation of the Queen. The Queen was the young girl who raised the most money for the church through whatever creative idea she devised, perhaps by selling tamales. The first queen was Bertha Esther Grarcia Carbajal. (Unknown year)

(Bea Garcia Grandos and Theodore Garcia provided above information on 29 June 2000.)

Juan Gutierrez says in his book, "The La Luz I Remember" that Mrs. Carbajal was the first Fiesta Queen in 1957.

? If the Fiesta was being held in the 1930's, had there not been a queen before 1957?

We are looking for more information about the Fiesta, its activities, its officials, pictures, etc. Also, it would be interesting to find out if the artist was depicting actual people in the painting. If so, the priest has been tentatively identified as Father Berheggen.
